Renault Opens a New Design Centre, Its Largest Outside France!

Renault has announced the launch of its newest and largest design centre outside France, Renault Design Centre Chennai (RDCC). With an investment of €1.5 million (approximately ₹14.5 crore), the facility represents a pivotal development in Renault’s localisation strategy in India, as part of its ‘renault. rethink’ vision. Positioned within the Renault Nissan Technology & Business Centre India (RNTBCI) in Chennai, the RDCC is set to drive both domestic and global vehicle design operations.

The new centre is not Renault’s first design facility in India. It complements the existing studios in Pune and Mumbai, establishing a fully integrated design ecosystem focused on blending European aesthetics with Indian preferences. Renault’s ‘Tactile Confluence’ design philosophy will be applied here, combining modern styling elements with cultural nuances. The centre is equipped with advanced technologies such as virtual reality tools, a large LED wall for full-scale design projections, and multiple collaborative spaces that encourage iterative, team-based innovation.

This strategic move is directly tied to Renault’s upcoming product roadmap. Over the next two years, five new models will be developed at RDCC, targeting the B-SUV and C-SUV segments. All these models will be heavily localised, with up to 90% of parts and components sourced from within India. This push towards localisation is not only for matching customer ambitions but also for supporting the government's 'Make in India' initiative. It is part of Renault's overall strategy under its 'International Gameplan 2027', with a €3 billion investment worldwide in priority markets like India, Brazil, and Turkey.

Apart from product development, Renault is also revamping its brand presence in India with a new retail identity under the 'R-store' concept. The first of these new-generation dealerships has already been launched in Chennai. This new format brings a more integrated and contemporary visual language to its showrooms, designed to improve the overall customer experience. The RDCC will feed into this new brand expression by providing design consistency from product to point-of-sale.

Renault's dedication to the Indian market is evident. With RDCC, the carmaker is not just making India a primary design centre but also synchronising strategies with the changing needs of Indian customers. As the market grows and design aspirations increase, RDCC will have a crucial role in defining cars that are not just engineered for India but designed for global appeal.
