Mercedes-Benz Hits 200,000th Made-in-India Car Milestone

Gear up, car enthusiasts! Mercedes-Benz India has touched yet another mind-boggling milestone: the 200,000th car rolling out of its high-tech Chakan plant located in Pune. The star of this milestone? A sleek GLC SUV, showcasing how luxury and local craftsmanship can create automotive miracles in India’s growing car market.

“This 200,000th car is a testament to our deep-rooted commitment to India,” said Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India. “It reflects our focus on local manufacturing to meet the surging demand for premium vehicles.”

Located in Chakan, Pune, the plant has been a powerhouse since 2009, succeeding an older facility in Pimpri. With over Rs 2,600 crore invested, it churns out 20,000 units annually, crafting everything from elegant sedans to rugged SUVs and high-performance AMGs. “Our Chakan facility matches global standards, delivering uncompromised quality,” Iyer emphasized.

Mercedes-Benz kicked off its Indian journey in 1994 with the E-Class sedan, a game-changer in luxury. Since then, it’s sold over 100,000 cars, building trust among India’s elite drivers. The Chakan plant’s versatility ensures a diverse lineup, catering to varied tastes, from compact luxury to adrenaline-fueled performance models.

In 2023, Mercedes-Benz India made a record-high sale of 17,408 units, the highest for it so far. This goes along with India's growing appetite for the luxury car segment, which has been further boosted by rising incomes and lifestyle changes. It shows an indication of either exports or strong stocks, as this 200,000 figure is now against 100,000-plus sales and showcases the importance of this facility once again in the region.

Imminently launching new products and even electric vehicles (EVs) in 2024 will bring much excitement. The investment will not only be in tune with global sustainability movements, but it also places the company at the forefront of a greener automotive shift in India by establishing Mercedes-Benz as a leader in this type of driving. "We’re ready to drive the future with innovative models," said Iyer.

Well, what does this mean indeed? The 200,000th car isn't just a number; it's a representation of the giant bet taken by Mercedes-Benz on the country when it comes to being an assembly powerhouse. For the car enthusiast, it's a paying off of the case for quality, creativity, and excitement with luxury in driving. As India's streets become more glitzy, Mercedes-Benz is driving the way with style and substance.
