How Mileage is Calculated

The formula behind fuel efficiency and running cost estimation

Core Formula

Mileage (kmpl) =
Distance ÷ Fuel Consumed

Example

Car travels 420 km using 28 L of petrol
→ 420 ÷ 28 = 15 kmpl

01

Record the distance travelled

Use the trip meter or odometer reading to note the exact kilometres driven after refuelling.

02

Measure fuel consumed

Fill the tank again and note how many litres were required. That amount was used for the trip.

03

Divide distance by fuel

If your car travelled 420 km and consumed 28 litres, mileage is 420 ÷ 28 = 15 kmpl.

04

Add fuel price for running cost

Multiply litres consumed by city fuel price to estimate total fuel cost and cost per kilometre.

Mileage Insights

Practical guidance on fuel efficiency, running cost and mileage planning

What is vehicle mileage?

Vehicle mileage shows how far a car or SUV travels on one unit of fuel. In India, petrol and diesel mileage is expressed as kmpl (kilometres per litre), CNG as km/kg and EV efficiency as km/kWh. A higher number means lower running cost for the same distance travelled.

Why real-world mileage differs from claimed

Claimed ARAI figures are measured under controlled lab conditions. Traffic, AC usage, payload and driving style reduce real-world mileage by 10–30% versus certified numbers.

Proven tips to improve fuel efficiency

Maintain steady speed, avoid rapid acceleration, keep tyres inflated correctly and service the air filter regularly. These simple habits can improve your mileage by 10–20%.

Fuel cost planning across Indian cities

Petrol and diesel prices vary significantly by city due to local taxes. Use the city selector in the calculator for accurate trip cost estimates closest to your location.

Mileage Calculator FAQs

Common questions about mileage calculation, fuel efficiency and EV range

How is fuel mileage calculated?
Mileage (kmpl) = Distance Travelled ÷ Fuel Consumed. For example, if you drive 400 km using 25 litres of fuel, your mileage is 400 ÷ 25 = 16 kmpl. Our calculator handles this automatically the moment you click Calculate.
What does L/100km mean?
L/100km (litres per 100 kilometres) is a European standard for fuel consumption. It tells you how many litres of fuel your vehicle consumes over 100 km. Formula: L/100km = (Fuel ÷ Distance) × 100. Lower values indicate better efficiency.
What is a good mileage for a car in India?
For petrol hatchbacks, 14–22 kmpl is considered good. For diesel sedans, 18–26 kmpl is typical. CNG vehicles often achieve 22–28 km/kg. EVs are measured in km/kWh — figures above 5 km/kWh are excellent for Indian driving conditions.
How do I calculate trip fuel cost?
Use the Trip Calculation tab. Enter your trip distance, the fuel you expect to consume, and the current fuel price per litre. The calculator instantly shows your total trip cost and cost per kilometre.
What does km/kWh mean for electric vehicles?
km/kWh (kilometres per kilowatt-hour) measures electric vehicle efficiency. It tells you how many kilometres your EV can travel on each unit of electricity. A higher km/kWh means better range per charge.
How can I improve my car's fuel efficiency?
Maintain steady speeds and avoid rapid acceleration. Keep tyres inflated to the recommended pressure. Use the correct engine oil grade. Service the air filter regularly. Avoid idling for extended periods. These habits can improve mileage by 10–20%.
