Which GSM Microfiber Cloth is Best for Car

Confused about which GSM microfiber cloth is best for car? Learn how to choose the perfect cloth for every surface, avoid scratches, and get a showroom shine every time!

Which GSM Microfiber Cloth is Best for Car

A spotless, without even a tiny scratch "car wash" – is not only about the soap or shampoo you use. But the cloth you choose to clean your car matters equally. Or I would say the MOST.

Using a regular random cloth isn’t enough. In a little slip up it can leave scratches on your car.

But if you continue this read – you will figure out which GSM microfiber cloth is best for car wash. Here I have also listed my favorite microfiber cloths that never left even a tiny scratch on my car. And I really really mean it.

What is GSM in Microfiber Cloth?

GSM stands for grams per square meter. It is a simple measurement number that tells you how thick, plush and absorbent your cloth is.

How GSM Affects the Cleaning of Your Car?

The GSM number effects:

  • Absorbency: Higher GSM cloths soak up more water, great for drying.

  • Softness: Plush cloths are gentler on the car surface and don’t leave marks.

  • Durability: Denser cloths last longer.

Types of GSM Microfiber Cloths for Car Washing

If you think “higher the GSM number safer it is to use” then you need to consider this point – from lowest to highest, all GSM microfiber cloths are useful for the specific spot of your car you want to clean.

Here I have listed which type of GSM cloth is best for a specific type of cleaning.

Low GSM (200–300 GSM) – Best for General Cleaning

Low GSM microfiber cloths are lightweight and slightly rougher. They’re great for:

  • Removing dust and dirt from interiors

  • Cleaning glass, windows, and mirrors

  • Pre-wash wiping of exterior surfaces

Tip: Avoid using low GSM cloths on paint during washing or drying — they’re not as soft and could leave swirl marks.

Medium GSM (300–400 GSM) – Ideal for Car Exteriors

Medium GSM cloths strike a balance between softness and durability. Perfect for:

  • Main washing with car shampoo

  • Wiping off excess water after rinsing

  • Safe on most car paints

High GSM (400–600+ GSM) – Best for Drying & Polishing

High GSM microfiber towels are ultra-soft and absorb water quickly. They’re perfect for:

  • Drying your car without leaving water spots

  • Waxing, polishing, and buffing the surface

  • Protecting delicate clear coats on your luxury cars

Top Recommended GSM Ranges for Different Car Types

  • Sedans & Hatchbacks: 350–400 GSM is usually enough for wash and dry.

  • SUVs & Larger Vehicles: 400–500 GSM for faster drying on bigger surfaces.

  • Luxury Cars with Delicate Paint: 500–600 GSM for maximum softness and zero scratches.

Tips for Buying the Best Microfiber Cloth

Check Blend Ratio (80/20 vs. 70/30)

A cloth with an 80/20 polyester-polyamide combination is affordable and much durable, while 70/30 combinations are softer and more absorbent — better for polishing and drying.

Consider Size and Edge Finish

  • Bigger cloths (16x24 inches or more) save time on large panels.

  • Opt for edgeless or silk-edged towels to prevent scratches.

Avoid Lint-Prone or Rough Materials

Low-quality microfiber can shed lint or feel rough. Always choose premium-grade towels from reputable brands.

Recommended Microfiber Brand

I always prefer the two best microfiber cloth brands for car washing I have been using for almost 3 years.

  1. ShineXPro,

  2. Softspun

Both of these brands are trusted by thousands of car owners along with me and are available on Amazon.

Caring for Your Microfiber Cloths

Proper Washing & Drying Methods

  1. Wash separately in cold or lukewarm water.

  2. Use a mild liquid detergent (no fabric softeners).

  3. Air-dry it after washing.

Storage Tips for Longevity

Store your microfiber cloths in a clean, dry container to keep them dust free and prolong their softness.
