India's cheapest diesel car hatchback, the much-popular Tata Altroz, is all set to get a facelift, and a heavily camouflaged model was recently caught on the road. The changes appear to be minor, but the new design suggests some thrilling new features. Though the heavy camouflage made it difficult to identify all the changes, there is plenty of excitement for what Tata Motors has planned with this facelift. Most mechanical parts, including engine offerings and features, are likely to be the same as the outgoing model. But the most thrilling news is that Tata may carry over premium features from the highest trims to the lower versions, providing additional value to customers.
Despite the extensive camouflage, some design changes were evident. Tata appears to have revamped the front bumper with a stylish recess for the fog lamps, and the facelift may also sport more angular LED headlamps. The LED technology has also been rolled out to the indicators and the taillights, lending the car a fresher, premium feel. A new set of trendy alloy wheels was also spied on the test mule, which is a new twist to the styling.
Stepping inside, the updated Altroz should be equipped with some new upholstery and features. Here's the good news: features that were previously exclusive to the higher trims may now be launched in the lower trims. For example, ventilated seats, which were previously only offered in the Tata Altroz Racer, may now be available in mid-level variants. Onlookers also pointed out the potential inclusion of a 10.25-inch touchscreen, another high-end feature filtering down to the mid-range versions.
The Tata Altroz facelift will probably have the same powertrain options that have made the car so successful. It's the only vehicle in its class to still provide a diesel engine option. Customers will still get to pick between petrol, diesel, and CNG variants, which are:
A 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol motor (also available with CNG) producing 87bhp & 115Nm.
A 1.2-litre turbo petrol unit churning out 118bhp & 170Nm, offered in the Altroz Racer variant.
A 1.5-litre diesel engine that makes 88bhp & 200Nm.
Gearbox choices include a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic for the petrols. The diesel continues to be mated to a 5-speed manual, while the sporty Altroz Racer comes with a special 6-speed manual gearbox for enthusiasts seeking a more exciting drive.

Presently, the Tata Altroz goes from Rs 7.77 lakh to Rs 12.94 lakh (on-road, Mumbai), the top-spec Racer edition being included. With the facelift and the additional features, though, buyers may witness a price rise of as much as Rs 70,000 depending on the trim. Although the hike may push the top-of-the-line variants into the premium segment, the value addition in features and the design changes will probably make the hike acceptable.
The official launch date for the Tata Altroz facelift hasn’t been announced yet, but with spy shots already surfacing, it won’t be long before this updated model hits the streets. Stay tuned for more details and pricing updates as we get closer to the launch!
