Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella Launch: Toyota's First EV with Buyback Guarantee

Toyota sold over 2.6 lakh cars in India last year on the strength of hybrids alone. Now it wants a piece of the electric SUV market, and the Urban Cruiser Ebella is its opening move. Bookings opened on 20 January 2026. Prices haven't been announced yet, but expect the range to sit between Rs 19 lakh and Rs 24 lakh (ex-showroom).

What Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella Has to Offer Buyers

Two battery choices. The base E1 variant gets a 49 kWh LFP pack good for 440 km (ARAI-claimed). The E2 and E3 move up to a 61 kWh pack with a claimed range of 543 km. Real-world numbers from early highway testing land at around 370 km for the 61 kWh variant. So if you commute 40 km a day in the city, you're charging once a week.

Motor output is 144 hp with the smaller battery and 174 hp with the larger one. Torque stays at 189 Nm across the range. The 0-100 kmph run takes 9.25 seconds, which is not class-leading, but it handles city traffic with ease. Drive modes are Eco, Normal, and Sport.

The cabin gets a dual 10-inch screen setup, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera on the top trim, and reclining rear seats. Safety kit includes 7 airbags, Level 2 ADAS with lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control, plus all-round disc brakes. That ADAS suite was rare at this price point even a year ago.

This Number Could Change Your Buying Decision

Toyota is offering a 60 percent buyback assurance after three years. On a car priced at Rs 20 lakh ex-showroom, that's Rs 12 lakh back, guaranteed. No other mass-market EV in India comes with that promise today.

Add an 8-year battery warranty and a Battery as a Service (BaaS) rental option that lets you skip paying for the battery upfront, and the ownership story starts looking very different from what buyers feared about EVs two years ago.

Toyota also has 500+ EV-ready service touchpoints already live across India. That's not a promise for the future. It's available on day one.

Who Should Buy the Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella?

If you were looking at the Hyundai Creta Electric or the Tata Curvv EV, the Ebella belongs in that conversation. The Creta Electric starts at Rs 18.02 lakh and has established its credibility over a year in the market. The Curvv EV offers sharper styling. But neither one gives you a 60 percent buyback or 8 years on the battery from a brand with Toyota's service network.

The Maruti eVitara is the closest rival, technically sharing the same platform and specs. But Toyota's after-sales network and ownership assurances tilt the balance for buyers who are still nervous about long-term EV ownership costs.

One honest note: the Ebella weighs 1,815 kg, which is 238 kg more than the top-spec Creta Electric. At highway speeds, the ride can get fidgety over rough patches, and the turning radius is on the wider side. These are real-world considerations worth a test drive before you book.
