Tesla Model Y vs Hyundai Ioniq 5: Which Premium EV Is the Best?

Two of the most talked-about EVs on the planet are now both on Indian roads. Same price band. Completely different ownership stories.

That difference is the whole comparison.

Price Difference Between Ioniq 5 & Model Y

The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 5 launched at ₹55.70 lakh (ex-showroom) — one variant, fully loaded. Tesla Model Y starts at ₹59.89 lakh for the base RWD and climbs to ₹67.89 lakh for the Long Range version.

Both are fully imported CBUs. Both pay that import duty price.

The Ioniq 5 is cheaper. By a noticeable margin at the base level.

Range and Battery Comparison

Ioniq 5 gets an 84kWh pack. ARAI claims 690km. Real-world owners consistently report 430 to 510km in mixed driving.

Tesla Model Y base has a 64kWh battery, rated at 500km WLTP. The Long Range at ₹67.89 lakh moves to 84.2kWh and 661km WLTP. Real-world expectations: 380 to 550km depending on driving style and speed.

At the base price point, Ioniq 5 wins on range. At the Long Range price point, Tesla closes the gap.

Charging Support and Time

The Ioniq 5 supports 350kW DC fast charging. It goes from 10 to 80 per cent in around 18 minutes. That is a restroom and coffee stop on any highway, and you leave full.

Tesla's Supercharger network in India right now has five stations. Delhi, Mumbai, Gurugram, Pune. Excellent if you live there. Essentially useless if your regular routes go anywhere else.

The Ioniq 5 also has Vehicle-to-Load (V2L). You can run appliances directly from the battery. Tesla does not offer this at all.

Infotainment: The CarPlay Problem

Tesla runs a 15.4-inch touchscreen for everything — climate, mirrors, indicators, navigation. No Apple CarPlay. No Android Auto. Not on any Tesla. That is their philosophy.

Ioniq 5 gets dual 12.3-inch screens with wireless CarPlay, Android Auto, and even in-car payment for charging. More conventional. Far more compatible with how Indian buyers actually use a car.

One more thing. Tesla's Full Self-Driving feature costs ₹6 lakh extra here. It cannot be activated in India. Government clearance is still pending. Do not spend that ₹6 lakh.

Ground Clearance: The Most Underestimated Problem

Ioniq 5 sits at 160mm. Tesla Model Y at 167mm.

Both are low. Badly low for Indian roads. Speed breakers will scrape. Broken service road access will be stressful. This is a real concern with either car and most reviews gloss over it entirely.

Service Reality of Hyundai Vs Tesla

Hyundai has service centres in hundreds of Indian cities. Ownership anxiety is low because help is never far.

Tesla currently operates out of four cities. Outside that network, you are largely on your own when something goes wrong. Warranty is shorter too: 4-year standard coverage against Hyundai's 5-year plan, and 8-year EV powertrain warranty against Hyundai's 10-year coverage.

Verdict: Tesla Model Y vs Hyundai Ioniq 5, Which One is Better?

Buy the Tesla if: You live in Delhi, Mumbai, Gurugram, or Pune. You want the best software experience in any EV. You do not need CarPlay and will not miss it.

Buy the Ioniq 5 if: You travel beyond those four cities. You want 350kW charging, CarPlay, V2L, a longer warranty, and a ₹4 lakh lower entry price. For most Indian buyers in most Indian cities, this is the more sensible car.

Both are genuinely world-class EVs. But world-class is only useful when the infrastructure and service network around the car matches the car itself.

Right now, in India, one of these is closer to that point than the other.
