The information shows that the Tata Punch EV scored better in overall ratings of child occupant protection (COP) and adult occupant protection (AOP) than the Tata Nexon EV. Both cars were awarded the same marks in the vehicle test and child restraint system installation.
The crash test ratings are a frontal impact crash test, a side impact crash test, and a pole side impact test to provide an overall safety rating.
Let us discover how the Tata Punch EV and the Tata Nexon EV fared separately in this safety war.
Tata Punch EV: Results and Update
The Tata Punch EV was a showstopper at the Bharat NCAP crash tests, where it received a 5-star rating. It had 31.46 out of 32 points for Adult Occupant Protection and 45 out of 49 points for Child Occupant Protection.
During the frontal offset test, Punch EV provided "good" protection for the driver's and passenger's head, neck, chest, and knees. The tibia of the driver and the chest of the co-driver received "adequate" protection. Side impacts provide good protection for every part of the body, which is important for safety. The Punch EV got full marks in dynamic child safety tests, again setting high marks in terms of its credentials to use with family.
This performance places the Tata Punch EV in the list of safest electric vehicles in India, particularly in the compact SUV class.
Tata Nexon EV: Results and Update
Tata Nexon EV also got a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, closely following Punch EV on points, but still showing great safety performance. It scored 29.86 out of 32 for Adult Occupant Protection and 44.95 out of 49 for Child Occupant Protection.
The Nexon EV had "good" protection for the driver's head, neck, pelvis, thighs, and feet, but the chest and tibia protection was "adequate." Side impacts saw the car scoring good marks in all protection categories.
In child occupant protection, the Nexon EV was extremely good, except that it scored a slightly lower mark than that of the Punch EV when there was a test of frontal impact on an 18-month-old dummy. Otherwise, the Nexon EV remains one of the very best in the EV market for customers where safety is of utmost concern.
Safety Features
Tata Punch EV and Tata Nexon EV both have a wide range of safety features that were key in earning the best ratings. Safety features that come standard on both include six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), hill hold control, hill descent control, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and rear park sensors. ISOFIX child seat mounting points add to child occupants' safety as well, which was also taken into consideration by Bharat NCAP when conducting child safety ratings.
Surprisingly, the Tata Nexon EV also offers front parking sensors as an added level of convenience and protection while turning the vehicle around in small areas.
Bharat NCAP crash tests, particularly the side collision crash test and frontal collision crash test, are severe and try to mimic conditions of a genuine crash as best as possible. It is a sign of an excellent car to be able to safeguard its passengers well under varied types of collisions, if it can perform well under such tests.
Pricing and Market Positioning
Price for the Tata Punch EV ranges between ₹9.99 lakh to ₹14.44 lakh (ex-showroom). Compact dimensions, an energy-efficient electric powertrain, and a high safety rating, however, make Punch EV compete against the likes of the Citroën E-C3 in the entry-level EV space.
The Tata Nexon EV, priced between ₹12.49 lakh and ₹17.19 lakh (ex-showroom), offers greater footprint, greater performance choices, and greater features. It goes up against the Mahindra XUV400 and the upcoming MG electric SUV in the mid-range electric SUV market.
To Sum It Up
Both vehicles offer attractive alternatives to consumers seeking efficient and safe electric vehicles, though they reside in different markets and usage niches.

Tata Motors' achievement in the Punch EV and Nexon EV in Bharat NCAP crash tests is another step India takes towards safer, more reliable electric vehicles. Although the slightly better adult as well as child occupant protection ratings of the Tata Punch EV provide it a slight advantage, the Tata Nexon EV's larger feature set and utility-biased positioning also render it attractive to another group of buyers.
For enthusiasts as well as regular heavy users, these results reassure that opting for a Tata EV is investing in greener mobility and benchmark safety. Tata Motors is taking the lead, with safety always at the fore, as India's EV sector develops.
