Tata Sierra just scored a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, nearly acing both adult and child safety tests. But does your budget variant actually get those 7 airbags?

Tata Motors just dropped another safety bombshell. The all-new Tata Sierra has walked away from Bharat NCAP crash tests with a full 5-star rating for both adult and child occupant protection, making it one of the safest midsize SUVs you can buy in India right now.

Tata Sierra Adult Safety Score

31.14 out of 32 — that's nearly a perfect score for adult protection.

The Sierra aced the Frontal Offset Deformable Barrier test with 15.14 out of 16 points and then went ahead and scored a clean 16 out of 16 in the Side Movable Deformable Barrier test. That side impact score is a perfect 10. It also cleared the Side Pole Impact test, which simulates hitting a pole or a tree — the kind of accident that can be particularly brutal for the person sitting closest to the impact.

The crash test dummies recorded good to adequate protection across the chest, knees, and tibias. The feet scored "good" too. In simpler terms, the structure around the driver and front passenger held up remarkably well when things went wrong.

Tata Sierra Child Safety Score

44.73 out of 49 points earned it 5 stars in child protection as well.

In the dynamic test, the Sierra scored 23.73 out of 24. Almost nothing left on the table. The child restraint system (CRS) installation test, which checks how securely child seats lock into the car, returned a perfect 12 out of 12. If you're a parent, that number should mean a lot.

The vehicle assessment for child safety came in at 9 out of 13, which is solid, though it does leave a small margin for improvement. Still, an 18-month-old and a 3-year-old dummy both showed near-full protection scores in dynamic testing. That's the real headline for family buyers.

What Safety Features Does the 2026 Tata Sierra Come With?

The 5-star result isn't an accident pun intended. The Sierra ships with 7 airbags, electronic stability control, a Level 2 ADAS suite (think lane-keeping assistance, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control), a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, electronic parking brake with auto-hold, tyre pressure monitoring, and hill hold assist.

That's a genuinely impressive list for a car that starts at Rs 11.49 lakh.

One Thing Worth Questioning

Here's something to think about though. The Sierra's entry price of Rs 11.49 lakh gets you into the door, but most of those safety features, especially the 7 airbags and ADAS — are likely to be packed into the higher variants closer to the Rs 21.29 lakh ceiling. Bharat NCAP tests the top-spec or a representative variant, not the base model. So if you're considering the Sierra primarily for its safety credentials, it's worth checking exactly which trim level was crash-tested and whether the base variant you're budgeting for offers the same passive safety equipment. Safety stars are great. Knowing what you're actually paying for is better.

Tata Sierra Compared to Rivals

The Creta, which is the segment's biggest seller, does not have a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating. That's a significant gap in a market where safety awareness is rapidly growing. The Sierra also competes with the Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Skoda Kushaq Facelift, Honda Elevate, Volkswagen Taigun, MG Astor, and Tata's own Curvv.

Among that crowded list, a verified 5-star safety result is a real differentiator. Not just marketing.

Tata's Safety Record Keeps Getting Stronger

From the Punch to the Nexon, Harrier, Safari, and now the Sierra. Tata has made a clean sweep of 5-star ratings across its SUV lineup. That consistency is hard to ignore and even harder for rivals to match quickly.

If safety is your top priority when buying a family SUV around the Rs 12–20 lakh mark, the Sierra has just raised the bar for the entire segment. Worth a serious test drive and a careful look at the variant-wise spec sheet before signing anything.
