Hyundai Motor India is starting 2026 with a powerful new leader at the wheel. The company has named Tarun Garg, a veteran from within its own ranks, as its new Managing Director and CEO.
This is a landmark move, as Garg will be the first Indian national to hold the top position in the company's nearly three-decade history in the country.
Who is Tarun Garg?
If the name sounds familiar, it should. Tarun Garg isn't a new face to Hyundai. He has been a key driver behind the company's recent success.
He first joined Hyundai India as the head of sales, service, and marketing. His sharp understanding of what Indian car buyers want led to a rapid promotion. In 2023, he became the company's Chief Operating Officer (COO).
Why Was He Chosen for the Top Job?
Simply put, his track record speaks for itself. Under his leadership as COO, Hyundai India hit the fast lane. The company achieved record sales for three years in a row. It also posted record-breaking profits and completed India's largest IPO in 2024.
The global headquarters specifically cited his "progressive vision" and "deep understanding of the Indian market." They needed a leader who knows the Indian roads, both literally and figuratively, and Garg has proven he does.
When Does Tarun Garg Take Charge as the CEO?
Tarun Garg will officially begin his new role on January 1, 2026. He will be taking over from the outgoing MD and CEO, Unsoo Kim, who will be moving to a strategic role at Hyundai's parent company in South Korea.
